Shopping for aluminium boat kits or a flat-pack plate boat? You’re weighing up the same thing most of our customers did: how to get a serious plate-alloy hull without paying finished-boatyard prices. Here’s an honest look at the kit route — and the factory-built alternative that often lands at similar money.

What a plate boat kit really involves

A kit arrives as cut 5083 plate panels and a set of drawings. From there you (or a fabricator you hire) supply the welding, jigging, fairing, painting, wiring, plumbing, hydraulics and fit-out. The panels are the cheap part — the build is where the cost and risk live:

  • Welding quality decides the boat. Distortion, poor penetration or bad sequencing on a plate hull is expensive to fix and hurts resale.
  • Time adds up. A first-time builder typically spends 500–1,000+ hours getting a kit to survey-ready standard.
  • The “kit price” isn’t the boat price. By the time you add consumables, fit-out, steering, tanks, electrics and paint, many kit builds pass the cost of a factory-built hull.

The factory-built alternative — at kit-like money

Sea Raider plate boats are precision-built in marine-grade 5083 alloy by our factory partner, then fitted out, complianced and water-tested by our team at Cleveland Marina in Brisbane. You get a finished, warrantied plate boat — without a year in the shed:

  • 6.25m Pro Fisher — from $38,160
  • 6.85m Pro Fisher — from $59,760
  • 7.5m Pro Fisher / SportsCab / Centre Console — from $64,560
  • Boss 770 wide-body — from $83,760
  • 9.6m Pro Fisher — from $119,760

Every hull carries a 5-year structural warranty, with 6mm bottoms, 5mm topsides and fully welded checker-plate floors as standard. See the full Sea Raider range and pricing here.

When a kit still makes sense

If you’re a qualified boilermaker with a shed, time and access to a folder, a kit can be a rewarding project — we’re not here to talk you out of it. But if the appeal of a kit is price transparency and avoiding dealer margin, that’s exactly how we sell factory-built: published pricing, no games, and you can inspect stock boats on the water at Cleveland before committing.
